Dr. Renée Hartig

Dr. Renée Hartig studied neural and behavioural science at the University of Tübingen, Germany. In 2015, she co-founded Pro-Test Deutschland e.V. to promote science communication on animal research. She earned her doctorate summa cum laude in 2020 after investigating primate-specific sensory processing. Now at the Nathan Kline Institute and NYU School of Medicine, she applies translational approaches to study brain function.

Renée Hartig

Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research / NYU School of Medicine

Dr. rer. nat. Renée Hartig discovered a passion for neuroscience at Stony Brook University, New York, where she completed a bachelor degree in biology. She further pursued this passion at the Graduate Training Center for Neuroscience in Tübingen, Germany. She is an alumnus of the International Max Planck Research School and University of Tübingen. In 2020, she graduated summa cum laude after defending her doctoral thesis work on the mapping of sensory responses in the cerebral cortex. This research was reliant upon non-human primate studies. Prior to completing this research, in 2015, she founded a non-profit organization in Germany – Pro-Test Deutschland. Recognizing the responsibilities of conducting animal research and the importance of communication not only between researchers but also the public, Pro-Test Deutschland continues to provide fact-based information on the use of animals in scientific research and science communication training. In 2020, she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Mainz to study stress resilience in mice. After a decade of scientific training in Europe, Dr. Hartig is establishing her own research program, bridging basic and applied science, to study brain function. She now works at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research in New York and is a faculty member of the NYU School of Medicine.
